Progress in chess really does move in mysterious ways. You’d have thought that the Dutch Championship and the Greek and Turkish Team Championships should have sprinkled life-giving rain onto the fields of chess theory. But no, it was all as modest as could be, and nothing truly important was encountered except in the rare exceptions of the games by those who topped our list. But let’s take things in order.

129 thousand players in the world have a rating, but only 20 thousand of them have reached 2200, 13500 have made it to 2250 and the lucky holders of a 2300 rating and above number only 8150 people.
Greetings! Chess week no. 869 turned out to be somewhat more fruitful in theoretical terms. There was an abundant flow of novelties at all levels of importance; and putting together our third top-10 was a real pleasure.
Hello everybody! No sooner had the regular TWIC No.868 been issued than we prepared another evidence of chess inexhaustibility – weekly review of the best theoretical novelties. This time again nothing epoch-making has happened but several shown ideas is sure to change your notion of this or that variation.
10. Here we go. The novelty which took in our hit parade the 10th place occurred in the game Potkin-Alekseev. I think we shouldn’t be hypnotized by the outcome of the game,

I congratulate everybody on launching a website WhyChess.org! Starting from this week we’re going to record regularly the best novelties of the week at the same time remembering not very successful ones. The week No. 867 turned out to be not very revolutionary in this respect though the roving eye of chess professional is sure to find a lot of interesting things.
