Dortmund round 4. The difficult opponent.

Khenkin - Fridman

The German GMs (with the exception of Naiditsch) prefer not to fight each otehr at super-tournaments, and this game was no exception. Draw( ½ : ½ ).

Two old acquaintances quickly drew, thanks to perpetual check:

Leko - Adams

Draw ( ½ : ½ ).

In order to beat the intractable Meier, the ex-world champion had to create a man-made "phantom" attack:

Meier - Kramnik

26. Rac1 Rxc1 27. Rxc1 Qxb2 28. Rc7 Qe5 29. Qd7 Qf5 30. g4 Qf4 31. g5 Nd5 32. Nf6+

32…Qxf6! – A bitter disappointment for White. Black mates first  33. Qxd5 Qg6 34. Qe5 Rb5 35. Qf4 Rf5 36. Qe4 Qxg5+ 37. Kh3 Rf4 38. Qd3 g6 White resigns (0-1). «The "boss of Dortmund" would not mind adding an 11th trophy to his collection. .

Andreikin just cannot get going. Dima diod not play the opening very well, getting rather questionable compensation for the pawn he lost and his later unfortunate play saw White triple his material advantage:

Naiditsch - Andrikin

22... c5? – He clearly should not allow the creation of a powerful outpost on e6.  23. Ng5 Ba6 24. Nfe6+ Kg6 25. Nxe4 fxe4 26. Rc3 Rg8 27. Rg3+ Kh5 28. Bg5 Kg6 29. Bd8+ Kf7 30. Rxg8 Kxg8 31. Bxc7 Bxc7 32. Nxc7 Ra7 33. Ne8 – A third pawn is going.

Kf4 Kd6 48. c4 Bd3 49. h5  Black resigns (1-0).  At the finish, the Russian Champion has to meet the three home players, who are significantly lower rated, and with Kramnik, who will be after revenge for his defeat at the Tal Memorial.

The problem of the difficult opponent remains relevant in our day. Fabiano Caruana has had trouble with the Chinese GM before. Nothing changed this time:

Wang Hao - Caruana
